Safety of citizens is a primary role of local government. Palm Springs is no different. Despite the downturn, nearly 50% of Palm Springs’ budget is dedicated to public safety.
We are happy to report a decrease in crime for four straight years. We really owe this to the safety officials—the folks on the front lines—police and fire officials who have maintained responsiveness to citizen issues and answer the call each day.
I will continue to work closely with fire and police to ensure that Palm Springs can maintain these good statistics and that officials have all the tools they need to do their job.
Safety is one reason we successfully fought the location of the detention center, a large facility initially proposed to be at the gateway to Palm Springs on Highway 111.
In my State of the City Address, I outlined why we believe the location along our key corridor could have negative consequences for citizens, their family and friends coming to Palm Springs. We will work with county officials to make sure that we have a reasonable alternative that meets everyone’s needs.
